What it takes….
If you’ve got curly or wavy hair like I do, you probably know the struggle — frizz, dryness, and that telltale pouf that humidity seems to summon out of nowhere. After years of trying store-bought gels and creams, spending too much, I finally found something that truly works for me: homemade flax seed hair gel. How did I not know about this?
Hear me out…This works and I’m going to share with you how to do it. It is a bit messy, but you will make a gel that you won’t believe works so well. Also, this recipe makes a lot of gel. Cut the recipe in half if you have short curly hair.
This simple, nourishing recipe is packed with hair-loving ingredients, and the results are amazing. Defined curls, soft texture, very minimal crunch — and best of all, no frizz. Even in the sticky summer air! At this point, you are probably thinking, “Roxanne you have gone over the earthy crunchy cliff”. Well, maybe, but I’m no longer covering my hair in who knows what! And, Amazon can put all the ingredients on my porch! I haven’t figured the cost per ounce yet, but it will be minimal. minimal.
Straining seeds out
🌿 Why It Works :
Flax seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and create a natural gel that defines curls without stiffness.
Aloe vera juice helps hydrate and soothe the scalp while adding slip and shine.
Epsom salts add a touch of hold and help encourage curl pattern.
Manuka honey adds moisture and shine without weighing hair down.
Lavender essential oil not only smells lovely, but also promotes a healthy scalp.
All the seeds are out!
✨ Homemade Flax Seed Hair Gel Recipe
Ingredients:
½ cup whole flax seeds (This link is Amazon. Walmart has them too.)
3 cups water
1 cup aloe vera juice (Amazon link. Walmart has this.)
2 tsp Epsom salts (Amazon link. Walmart and just about everywhere has this)
½ tsp Manuka honey
5–10 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
Optiphen (optional natural preservative)
Instructions:
In a saucepan, combine flax seeds, water, and aloe vera juice.
Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for around 10 minutes, stirring often.
⏰ Important: Do not overcook! If you simmer too long, the gel becomes too thick to strain. Keep an eye on it.When the mixture reaches close to an egg-white consistency, remove from heat.
Immediately strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bowl or measuring cup.
Stir in Epsom salts, Manuka honey, and essential oil (& optiphen if using) while the gel is still warm.
Let it cool, then pour into a clean jar or squeeze bottle.
This recipe makes a full jar. You may want to cut it in half.
🧊 Storage:
This is a water based product so, this gel must be refrigerated and will last about 2 weeks. For longer shelf life, consider adding a natural preservative such as leucidal liquid or optiphen (follow manufacturer usage rates). I use optiphen regularly in water based products to prevent bacterial growth. I put a small amount of the gel in a pump dispenser in my bathroom then refill it. The rest stays in a sealed jar in the frig. For travel I plan to use a small fliptop bottle like the one pictured below.

🌸 How I Use It:
After washing my hair, I apply a generous amount to wet hair and scrunch it in. Let air-dry or diffuse for defined, frizz-free curls. It’s lightweight, hydrating, and gives just the right amount of hold — no crunch, no flakes. After my hair dries I scrunch again and I have soft curls.
